A leading figure of Venezuelan abstraction of the 1960s and 1970s, Gego (Gertrud Goldschmidt) was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1912, and graduated with a degree in engineering and architecture from the University of Stuttgart in 1938. With the advent of World War II, she migrated to Venezuela, settling in Caracas in 1939. After Gego’s death in 1994 the foundation was created as a family initiative to preserve her work.
“conversations – fg” is a short-documentary series created with the intention of commemorate the 20 years since the founding of the ‘Fundación’ but also to explore the world around the artist and preserve the beautiful and not always known connections driven by her work.
The documentary is directed by Montenegro & Lafont, and feature 17 interviews with artists, curators, collectors, family and friends of Gego. Among them are recognized personalities from the art world as Glenn D. Lowry (Director of MoMA New York) and Carlos Cruz-Diez (Venezuelan kinetic artist 1923-2019).
The series was screened to the public for the first time by the end of 2019 at the ‘Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía’ in Madrid-Spain.
